An archipelago of 572 islands adrift in the Bay of Bengal, the union territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands streches over an area of more than 700 sq. kms.Since pre-historic times aboriginal tribes have lived on these islands. The Andaman group is inhabited by tribes of Negrito origin, while the Nicobar Islands are inhabited by the Mongloid stock. The first settlement of the British took place in 1789 & later in 1858 it became a penal settlement.

Today, people f all faiths live here - Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs & of course the tribals. This amazing linguistic & racial mix has resulted in a cultre that is innately hospitable & uniquely distinctive.

For the nature lover the islands offer rich & varied delights. The sea around offers ample scope for water sports while the islands themselves consist of their territory lush green forest cover extending over 86% of the territory. The rarest of rare floa & fauna have flourished undisturbed on these island, more so because 36 out of these are inhabited.

Adventure sports like trekking, island camping,snorkelling & scuba diving are the not to be missed attractions. And for tourists who want to get away from the madding crowd, a visit to these islands remains etched in the memory forever.

Hightest Peak : Saddle Peak - 732 metres.
Temparature : Min - 23° C. Max - 31° C.
Climate : Tropical Throughout the year.

Humidity is relatively high at 70% to 90% with gentle breeze blowing round the year. The weather is generally pleasant with an average annual rainfall of 3,000 mm ( May to mid September & November to January ).

Forest Cover : 86%.
Best Season : October to May.
Clothing : Cotton throughout the year.

How to Reach There

By Air

Port Blair is connected with Chennai & Calcatta. Presently, flights are operated by Alliance Air on Chennai - Port Blair Sector on Monday, Wednesday, Friday & Sunday. Calcatta - Port Blair Sector on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday & Sunday.

By Sea

Regular passenger ship services are available to Port Blair from Chennai, Calcatta & Vishakhapatanam. There are three to four sailings in a month from Calcatta & Chennai to Port Blair. There is a sailing from Vishakhapatanam once a month.
