Krishannagar Travel Information

KrishnanagarThe headquarters town of the district of Nadia, Krishnanagar is conveniently connected with Calcutta both by rail and road. By rail it is 100 km. The town is 3 km. from the railway station. By bus it is 118 km on NH 34 Within the town, city buses as well as cycle rickshaws are available for transportation. Krishnanagar is famous for its toy and clay models.

Ghumi, on the banks of the river Jalangi is where the claymodellers produce and sell their artistry. The Krishnanagar Palace also is famous. The Roman Catholic Church at Krishnanagar is another attraction.

Sweets like Sarpuriya and Sarbhaja are Krishnanagar specialities and are no less famous than the clay images.

Nabadwip

Conveniently connected by rail and road. By rail from Calcutta (Howrah) and by road from Calcutta, Krishnanagar and other places. About an hour's journey by bus from Krishnanagar.

Nabadwip is the place of birth of Sri Chaitanya and hence has become an important centre of pilgrimage. Several temples of the Vashnavites are there. Of the many festivals. Del (March) and Ras (November) are more famous.

Mayapur

On the other bank of the river Bhagirathi. Ferry service between Nabadwip and Mayapur. Also direct bus from Krishnanagar (about one and a half hour journey). Though several old temples adorn Mayapur, the centre of attraction is the Chandrodaya Temple of the ISKCON.

Santipur

20 km. from Krishnanagar on NH 34. Direct local trains from Calcutta ( Sealdah ). Connected by a narrowgauge railway service with Nabadwip (19 km.). Santipur also is a famed Vaishnava centre. Handloom products are a speciality of the region. Ras (November) is the most important festival.

Fulia

26 km. from Krishnanagar and 6 km. From Santipur on NH 34. 92 km. from Calcutta. Birth place of the poet Krittibasa. Fulia is an important centre for production of handloom textiles, especially handloom

Bethuaohari

28 km. from Krishnaaagar. On way to Berhampore is Bethuadahari Railway Station. I km. from the staion is Bethuadahari Deer Park on NH 34. From Calcutta, Bethuadahari is 127 km. by rail and 148 km by road. The Deer Park, spread on a 165 acre forest is the habitat of various kinds of deer. For accommodation there are two Forest Rest Houses. For day-trippers, there is a Day Centre under the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation.
