Lohit Travel InformationWelcome to Tezu, the headquarter of Lohit district and to the holy place of Brahma Kund, also known as Parasuram Kund. The present name of Lohit district is derived from one of its principal rivers - the Lohit, which originates in the eastern Tibet nd enters India through Kibithoo area of the district. In the ancient Indian literature the river is called 'Lauhitya1 a name that is ssociated with the legends of Parasuram, referred in Srimad Bhagavat Geeta, Kalikapurana and in the Mahabharata.

The history of the district as an administrative unit can be traced back to the year 1914, when the North East Frontier Tract consisting of three administrative units viz.

(i) The Central and Eastern sections with headquarters at Sadiya

(ii) The akhimpur Frontier Tract with the headquarter at Lakhimpur and

(iii) The Western section with the headquarter at Charduar.

The ancient history of the individual Lohit district is not concreated due to paucity of historical evidence, literary or material, et the lower belt of the district is the base for evidence for existence of the ruins of ancient settlement, buildings, shrines and temples. The Parasuram Kund, Tamreswari temple, Sivalinga site and the city of king Bhismak situated in this region are also mentioned in the Puranic and Tantric literatures. The scenic beauty of the district are splendid, Tezu township alone attracts visitors for its set up.

There are different tribes in the district.

Their traditional dances, games and sports can be enjoyed in festive occasion. Elephant riding, angling, rafting, hitch-hiking, mountaineering etc. are the entertainment scopes available in the district.

Location
Lohit district is situated on the North Eastern extremity of Arunachal Pradesh. It lies approx. between the Latitudes 27°33' and 29°22' N and the Longitudes 95°15' E and 97°24' E.

Boundary

North :

China and part of Dibang Valley district of Arunachal Pradesh; South : Changlang District of Arunachal Pradesh; East : China and Burma; West : Assam state and a part of Dibang Valley district.

1,43,478 (Male : 77252 and Female : 66,226) as per 2001 Census (Provisional figures).

Tezu - 21 degree MSL (in mtrs.)

Topography
The snowy mountains along the international borders, the lower hills deck with dense evergreen forests, innumerable rivers and rivulets.

Climate
The climate is cool and highly humid in the lower elevations and in the Valleys and intensively cold in the higher elevations.
The winter prevails during the months from late November to early March. The period from March to May is the pre-monsoon season. It is followed by monsoon from June to October.

How to reach Tezu

Tezu is connected to the adjacent state-Assam by road and air. Visitor can reach Tezu by bus, private vehicle and taxis from Tinsukia, Dhola. One has to cross the rivers Noa-Dehing, Digaru and a few rivulets if the Tinsukia via Namsai road to Tezu route is followed. Or one has to cross mighty Brahmaputra river to Dhola-ghat, then Sadiya Sunpura road to Tezu.
There are two check-gates. One is at Dirak near Mahadevpur at Lekang Circle and the other is at Sunpura circle. The distance from Dirak gate to Tezu and from Sunpura to Tezu is about 65 kms. and 30 kms. respectively.

There is direct Arunachal Pradesh State Transport (APST) bus service connection from Tinsukia to Tezu. The Tinsukia APST bus station is situated at Tinsukia township along with the bus station of Assam State Transport Corporation. Private buses, taxis are also available in Tinsukia.

The nearest airports are at Dibrugarh (Mohanbari) and Guwahati in Assam. Helicopter (Pawan Hans) flights are available from Dibrugarh and Naharlagun.
