Handloom and Handicrafts are the most important and popular industrial activities in Mizoram. Mizoram Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited was established in 1988 to promote and operate scheme for the development of handloom and handicrafts industries in the state.
The beautiful shawls and Puan of different designs reflect the weaving skill of the Mizo women. As much as the women excell in weaving, the men have transformed Mizo handicrafts into works of art from mere functional pieces. With an objective to keep craftsmen abreast with the changing trend and to introduce them to new techniques and designs, Crafts Development Centres have been opened at Aizawl and Lunglei in the year 1991 and 2001 respectively. The Tribal Handloom Development Project was started in 1992. Under this Project, four emporia have been opened inside the state. Besides, one emporium and a showroom at Kolkata, and a permanent sales outlet in New Delhi have also been set up.
