NainitalThe Peaks

The walks are the main attraction of Nainital.One such place also known as Naina / China Peak is 2.5 hrs. walk, 5km from the Naini Lake.From the top, the highest point in the area (2610m), there are stunning views of the Himalayan peaks, the snow clad Nanda Devi & the mountains to the north. The early morning views are more clear. One can either trek or go on horse back. There is a ropeway which runs from the Mallital end of the lake to Snow View Peak, (2270m), a popular ventage point offering a panoramic view of 250km of the Himalayan ranges through a binocular telescope Fixed here. The ropeway is open from 0930-1300 & 1400-1700 hrs &: costs one way. Alternatively horses & mountain ponies are available for hire. A further pleasant option is to walk for one hour the distance of approx.2.5 km. A four km walk, 1.5 hour to the west of the lake brings one to Dorothy seat also known as Tiffin Top (2292m). From Dorothy seat it is a lovely 45 minutes walk to Land's End (2100m) through a forest of oak, deodar and pine. From Lands End there are five views out over the lake of Khurpatal. The hill offers a panoramic view of the teraced fields. It is accessible by horse also. From the Northwest corner of the lake, you can walk in 30 minutes to Gumey House, where Jim Corbett lived, this dwelling is now a private residence.

Hanumangarhi

3Km South of Nainital, 1951m above the place is a group of temples. From the temple of Hanuman ther are good views & spectular sunset over the plains. One km further on is the State Obsarvatoly which undertakes astronomical studies & optical tracking of artificial earth satellites.

Khuspa Ta

12km, one of the beautiful lake around Nainital & a real paradise for anglers is inhabited by numerous fish. It is situated on Nainital-Ramnagar motorable road. It can also be reached by a 6km trek along a gently ascending forest track.

Kilbury

2528m, 12km on motorable road, it is an ideal place for a quiet weekend holiday & picnic spot known for sunset. It is part of a forest reserve and is rich in flora & birdlife.

High Altitude Zoo

Perched at an altitude of 2075m, 1.5km away from the bus stand, the Zoo is famous for housing a variety of species of animals living at higher altitudes. It has the Siberian Leopard &: other wildlife. Closed on Monday.

Golf Course

One of the best Golf Course in Northern India. It is an 18-hole golf course. Visitors wishing to play the game should contact any of the TRH of KMVN.

Naini Temple

This charming hill resort gets its name from one of the eyes of Lord Shiva's wife. Sari. Her eye falling here makes this a sacred place and the popular Naini or Nanda Devi temple is by the Northern end of the lake. Understood to have been built in the 15th century AD. The temple is believed to be re established after 1880 disastrous landslide. Every year a statue immersion ceremony is celebrated here since 1918-19, similar to that in Maharashtra & West Bengal on the Bhardrapad Shukia Ashtami. An Idol of Naina Devi is made on Panchami (5th day), prayers are offered to Kadii trees on Sashti (6th day) and on Saptami (7th day) they are cut to create the Kadii Pillar which is decorated & is given the shape of an idol. On Ashtami (8th day) prayers are offers to the devi after the Maha Bhog & the Bah, and the Dola Visarjan is done after the customary rituals are performed.
