Pithorgarh Travel Information

Pithoragath is the easternmost district of Uttaranchal. Bound by Tibet in the north and Nepal in the east, it's strategically an important location. A place of exquisite natural beauty and serenity. Pithoragarh is popularly known as the 'Little Kashmir'. The captivating town with fascinating forests around at an impressive height of 1,645 mtrs. Is nestled in a small valley. Pithoragarh town town is a historical landmark. It was a major center of powr during the reign of the Chand Kings in Kumaon.

From here, pilgrims take their journey to the holiest shrines, Kailas and Mansarovar.

This valley also nestles the snow - capped peaks Nanda Devi East (7,434 mtrs.) and West (7,816 mtrs) Below this mighty peaks lie the alpine valleys and glaciers : Milam, Ralan, Namik and Sundardunga.

Pithoragarh is a city known for it's woolen clothes, wooden and cane handicrafts.

How To Reach There :

Airport :
Naini Saini is the airport at Pithoragarh, just 5 kms. Away from thecity. It is not a regular commercial airport.

Raihead :
Tanakpur is the nearest railhead, at a distance of 151 kms.

Road :
Pithoragarh is well connected by a good network of roads with all the major towns in the area. The distance from the nearest major town Champawat is 75 kms. Away, lohaghat is 90 kms, Munsyari (135 kms.) And Tanakpur (151 kms).

Places of Interest

Pithoragarh Fort :
An impressive fort built by the Gurkhas in the 18th Century.

Kapileshwar Mahadev :
A cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. In the outskirts of the city. Form here, one can have a panoramic view of the Soar Valley and the surrounding Himalayan peaks.

Dhwaj Temple :
At an altitude of loafty 2.100 mtrs, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Jayanti. It is located at a point which offeres a scenic view of the valley and the hills around.

Thal Kedar :
At a distance of 15 kms. From Pithoragarh, this place is of much religions importance. A large fair is held every year during Shivaratri.

Dharchula :
96 kms. From Pithoragarh, on the banks of river Kali, it's a transit pint, to Kailash Mansarover and Adi Kailash. It's a major wool and woolen products center.

Askot :
The ancient kingdom of the Katyur dynasty. A place still reminds the past. The name is derived from Asi-Kot, which literally means 80 forts. The remains are still visible. This place is surrounded by tall trees and water falls. At a distance of 54 kms, from Pithoragarh.

Gangolihat :
78 kms. From Pithoragarh. This is a major cultural center in the hills, known for music, dance and socio-religious activities. Situated in the midst of Saryu and Ramganga rivers, this is a place mentioned in ancient literature. Shankaracharya established the famous Mahakali Shaktipeeth in the 8th century. Goddess Kali is the reigning deity of the town.

Munsyari :
At a distance of 127 kms. From Pithoragarh, Munsyari is fast developing as a major winter sports center.
