Some of the most charming handcrafted jewellery comes from Rajasthan, with each area having its own unique style. While the rural women prefer chunky silver jewellery, the urban women have a penchant for gold. Some of the traditional adornments are rakhri, timamyan, bala, bajuband, gajra, gokhru, jod etc.

Rajasthan excels in a wide range of precious and semi - precious jewellery. Exquisite ornaments are made in Jaipur and Jodhpur using emerald, diamond, pearl, garnet, agate &: lapiz lazuli.

Meenakari is the art of enamelling: on gold or silver. In Jaipur the champleve or raised - field style is used. Enamelling is also done in Nathdwara on silver and other metals. Pratapgarh meena or thewa work in gold on a green or red enamel base is exquisite. Kundan is the art of setting precious stones in gold. Kundan jewellery is exclusive both in terms of design and workmanship. A combination of kundan and enamelling is done to give the jewel two equally beautiful surfaces, enamel at the back and kundan-set gems in the front.

All Rajasthani women wear bangles, for it is considered inauspicious for a woman's forearm to be bare. Lac bangles are worn as a sign of good omen and are made in an astonishing variety of designs - some in flat colours, some iridescent or marbled, while others flash white fire from rhinestones or tiny mirrors at the turn of the wrist. Glass bangles, a perennial favourite of Indian women are easily available in most parts of the state, the greatest variety being offered in Jaipur and Jodhpur.
