Rajasthan : Where To Shop

Rajasthali, the handicrafts emporium of the state government, offers a comprehensive choice of the best of Rajasthan. However, while you're visiting the state, you should look out for the distinctive crafts of each place. Do remember, however, that it's best to buy from a government-approved shop. Off the pavement, you may engage in some good-natured bargaining. Some of the best shops are more expensive because they need to pay a commission to your travel facilitators:however, they're also best equipped to ship your goods anywhere around the world.

Barmer :
Woollen dhurries, mirror embroidered hand printed textiles, carved furniture, camel hair rugs. Woollen blankets, textiles and stone carvings, all available at Sadar Bazaar.

Bikaner :
Leather gesso work and footwear at Mahatma Gandhi Road. Printed fabrics, quilts, blankets and shawls in the tiny shops off Kot Gate. Hand-woven shawls and jackets from Urmul Trust in Junagarh Fort.

Chittaurgarh :
Wooden, painted toys, thewa gold jewellery, Akola printed fabris and leather footwear.

Jaipur :
Gemstones and jewellery, hand block printed and tie-dyed fabrics and dress lengths, puppets and statues, metal crafts and wooden artefacts, paintings and blue pottery, light quilts and leather footwear ... almost everything made in Rajasthan is available in Jaipur. Major hunting grounds are the traditional markets of Bari Chaupar and Chhoti Chaupar where entire lanes are given to the practice of a single craft. At Johari Bazaar, you'll find all the jewellery-makers, at Khazane Walon ka Rasta, those who craft marble... For upmarket shopping, venture towards Mirza Ismail Road with its large handicraft stores and the new Ganapati Plaza where the fanciest boutiques are located. Rajasthali is on the same road. A large number of linen and personal-wear boutiques exist: ask particularly for Anokhi, Cottons, Rungeen Bazar and Soma.

Jaisalmer :
The cobbled streets hold tiny shops where you can find mirror-embroidered textiles, hand-printed fabrics, camel-wool jackets and blankets, stone and wood carvings, and silver jewellery. There are khadi showrooms that are extremely popular with domestic visitors.

Jodhpur :
Great buys around Sojati Gate are finely embroidered juttees, hand-woven dhurries, tie-dye fabrics and wooden handicrafts. At the base of Chhattar Hill is a medley of shops that deals in antique and old furniture, as well as export-order contemporary handicrafts such as lights, statuary, chests and an assorted range of exciting designer crafts.

Kota :
Best for its light, check-weave, cotton doria-sarees.

Pushkar :
At the time of its annual fair, the Mela is a hunting ground for inexpensive trinkets and local crafts - silver jewellery, terracotta pots, printed fabrics, embroidered textiles, beads, bangles, hair ornaments and more.

Shekhawati :
Everything from made-as-old furniture to metal utensils, wooden statues, chainmail lamps and tie-dyed fabrics.

Udaipur :
Best known for its miniatures and pichwai paintings, here are also terracotta panels and images, wooden toys, silver enamel figurines, thewa jewellery and locally dyed fabrics and textiles.
